Reset OS X Login Passwords via Command Line
If you’ve forgotten your OS X login password, or bought a used mac with an account already created, there is a pretty simple way you can still get into your account. With some simple command line inputs you will be able to reset or change your password and be back in your account in no time. The downside to doing this method is that you will your passwords that you have saved on your keychain.
To reset your OS X login password:
- reboot the computer and hold Apple+S as the machine is booting. This will put you in single user mode.
- Now enter the following commands #sh /etc/rc
- #passwd USERNAME (enter your username here)
- #reboot
Thats it. Your computer will restart and the password will be cleared out and your free to change it to whatever you think you will be able to remember this time.

Wow!! I mean wow!!! It only took THIRTEEN DAYS to put up some new content. Well done……YEESH! C’mon now…this is Mac UTOPIA right? not mac LIMBO????
Sorry about the lack of posts, I have a full time career and have been out of town a bit. I have a good number of posts planned to do, so I will try to get them up more frequently.
Great tip! Just got home with a new Mac Pro and the password was not what I thought it would be. Was able to reset it and install software. You might mention that when you are prompted to enter the old password you don’t have to. Just input your new one two times and move on.
