iPhone 1.1.3 Custom Ringtones - iToner Workaround

Posted by Scott | January 19, 2008 .

iphone 1.1.3 ringtonesSo after MacWorlds release of the iPhone firmware update version 1.1.3 you rushed into iTunes and downloaded it only to find your custom ringtones were gone.  You’re slightly annoyed that you have to load up iToner to put them back on.  Everything sync’s fine and you select your custom ringtone and notice it doesnt play the song.  Apple decided to disable mp3 playback for ringtones in this update.  TAKE A HINT APPLE.  We dont want to buy them if we already have the song on our computers.

iToner is usually quick to put out an update to fix whatever Apple decides to break in each update, but if you dont want to wait for you can do the workaround described below pretty easily.

1. Find your mp3 file that you were using as a ringtone, and drop it into iTunes.
2. Make sure your iTunes importing settings are such that AAC is selected for importing.
3. Right click on the file in iTunes playlist and select convert to AAC.
4. Drag the file from the iTunes playlist to your desktop and change the .aac file extension to .m4r
5. Open up iToner and proceed as normal with the sync process
6. Go into the iPhone settings and select your custom ringtone and it should play as expected.

Great fix, thanks! Only question is how do I remove the “silent” ringtones from my iPhone?

    Hi Dan,

To remove the silent ringtone, you should have it listed in iToner. Just delete it from iToner and then re-sync and it should also remove it from the iPhone.

when i right-click on the selected song, i don’t see a “convert selection to AAC”.. ?

  6. Scott January 22, 2008 6:05 pm

    Tm,

You must go into preferences>advanced>importing and make sure that AAC encoder is selected in the Import Using drop down box. If this is not selected here, then you will not have the option to convert to AAC when you right click on the song in the playlist.

This doesn’t work. DO NOT UPGRADE! This must be a plant, and for some reason it’s on top of the google search.

works fine only every time you resync with itunes you have to reload the songs with iToner.

Nice Chris. Works with no problems, like reloading every time you sync? That’s flawless, like you.

This shit doesn’t work and now I can’t even put purchased ringtones from apple on my phone either. I can’t put ONE fucking ringtone on my phone now and now I have to have that shitty default ringtone. I’m so po’d right now.

If it doesnt work for you then im sorry to say that your doing it wrong. I’ve done it with no problem and you can see from the comments others have had no problem. All I can tell you is make sure you following the directions closely and correctly and try again.
