Vienna - Mac RSS Reader

Up until a few months ago I wasn’t really into RSS feeds. I would just open up Firefox and open the bookmarks at all at once in tabs and figured that was a good enough for me. Looking back this is a stupid idea. Actually going to a webpage and looking at it is so 1990s America Online Style. For one thing going to a webpage, especially one that you check regularly, you never know what your going to get. You may get something new or you may be shown the same old thing thats been up there for a month with no updates. RSS feeds take the guess work out of daily web browsing and I couldnt function without them now.

There are plenty of readers out there that are web based like Bloglines, but for me thats not good enough. I don’t even want to go to the Bloglines website and load that page to check my feeds. I much prefer to have a client based reader and unfortunetly there aren’t many that are free for the Mac. There is one though, and its called Vienna. I love this app, its clean, quick, and easy to use. The UI blends in perfectly with the rest of OS X and its easy to navigate through and see which sites have been updated recently.

As you can see, the RSS feeds are organized on the left alphabetically with the number of new feeds available for each site. On the right is the list of feeds for the given site with the content of the feed below. You can set Vienna up to update the feeds for any interval you want. I find with the amount of feeds I have that its best to do it in increments of once every couple of hours, or else I get nothing done for checking to see whats new. When there are new feeds, the Vienna icon in the dock will display the number much like Apple Mail does when you have new emails available. If you aren’t up to times with RSS feeds and are looking to check them out, or if you have been using them since their beginnings, I highly recommend downloading Vienna to manage them all. Once you’ve downloaded it, I also recommend subscribing to my RSS Feed so you can find out about more great OS X apps like this one.

I’m one of the Vienna developers, and I’d like to thank you for your great feedback. Glad you like Vienna! If you ever have any suggestions or bug-reports to make, please to so in our forums at http://forums.cocoaforge.com . We are currently working on Vienna 2.2, which will sport an updated UI, enclosure support, feed autodetection in browser mode, and many other new stuff. Have fun!
