OS X Menu Bar Add Ons | Access Web Services Through the Menu Bar

Posted by Scott | April 15, 2007 .

The menu bar is useful for more things than just displaying the date and time.  It’s the perfect place to place a small unobtrusive icon that can do some pretty powerful things.  One of the best types of things to place in the menu bar is web services such as email, RSS, and application launchers.  I’ve written about TigerLaunch previously which is a little application that puts a drop down menu for easy acccess to launch apps that you dont want taking up space in the dock.  In addition to TigerLaunch, there are a ton of great little add-ons that you can add into your menu bar that can end up saving you a lot of time.  Below is a short list of some good ones, if you have any others that you really like, let us know in the comments.

  • Bloglines Menu - Displays the number of unread articles in your Bloglines RSS subscription feeds.
  • Delibar- Allows for quick access to your Del.icio.us bookmarks
  • DiggUpdate - Drop down menu for showing front page stories on Digg.com
  • Gmail Notifier - Displays the number of unread email messages in your Gmail account
  • iScrobbler - send iTunes track information directly to Last.fm
  • MailCountX - Display the number of unread email messages in your Apple Mail
  • Monocle - internet web search from various engines
  • wStock - Displays a scrolling stock ticker
  • yMail - Checks for new email messages in your Yahoo Mail account
  • CountDown Clock - displays a countdown to a certain date
  • Meteo - displays weather forecasts
  • Temperature Monitor - displays the current temperature your CPU is running at
  • MenuMeters - Displays CPU, memory, disk, and network stats
  • Amnesty - Allows you to select dashboard widgets and display them directly on the desktop

There are litteraly countless menubar plugins for OS X, these are just a few that I’ve come across.  If your favorite is missing from the list, leave it in the comments and I’ll add it to my list.
