Nestopia Rom Emulator | Play Oldschool NES Games on your Mac

Posted by Scott | March 31, 2007 .

nestopiaNEStopia is one of the best ROM emulators available on Mac OS X. For those of you unaware of what ROMs are, they are basically ported versions of your favorite oldschool console games. There are other applications available to play N64, PS1 and other older console games on your Mac or PC, but as a child of the 80s the nintendo entertainment system was by far the best.

Long gone are the days of having to push the power button on and off, quickly press the reset button, and the ever popular technique of “blow, smack, blow” on the cartridge to make it work just one more time. Roms will work anytime everytime and you can quickly get back in the ring and start smacking King Hippo in the mouth and the belly button just like the old days.

One downside of playing the ROMs on your computer is that you have to use the keyboard to play. Wouldn’t it be nice if some smart person offered a modded version of the indestructable NES controller to have a USB connection so you could use it on your computer? Well they have and you can buy one from RetroZone.com for $34.00. One of the greatest setups I’ve read about is hooking up a Mac Mini to your TV and running NEStopia using the modded USB NES controllers. This would certainly be the ultimate timewarp back to 1983.

Downloading the ROMs however is a somewhat sketchy process. Alot of the ROMs out there arent exactly legal, so finding and downloading them can be done at your own discretion. There are plenty of places you can get them and many times packages can be downloaded that include every NES game ever made. So if you do decide to download them you can be reliving your childhood with the likes of paperboy, ikari warriors, kid icarrus, spyhunter, excitebike and all the other legends.
