Mail Appetizer | New Mail Notification for Apple Mail

Posted by Scott | March 26, 2007 .

One thing that Microsoft got right was the use of pop up notifications for new email messages.  Out of the box Apple Mail doesnt have a pop up feature so the community made one themselves.  Mail Appetizer has been around for quite a while now, and I’ve been using it for around a year now, and I have to say its a must have if your at the comptuer for a good part of the day and recieve a lot of email.

While working I constantly hear the new mail notification sound, but alot of the time its a stupid chain letter, or an email from my mom with a lot of cartoons that really arent that funny.  I could do without stopping what I’m doing to see these but without the pop up notifications I never knew if it was an animated cat dancing or something important that I should read quickly.

Mail Appetizer solves the problem perfectly.  Whenever you get a new mail message a semi transparent window will pop up wherever you want and how ever large you want.  The window will include the header information showing who the email is from, subject and all that good stuff, as well as the content of the email.  The appearance and functionality of Mail Appetizer is very similar to Growl.

The window will only stay up for a few seconds so if you dont want to read the email right now, then you can ignore it until your ready.  Or while the window is up if you hover your mouse over it, it will stay open so you can read the email without ever having to open up Apple Mail.   The Mail pop up window also givesw you the option to open Apple Mail and go directly to that particular email or to go ahead and just delete the silly dancing cats.

Download Mail Appetizer and add pop up notifications alerts to your new emails in OS X.
