Mac Web Browser Choices

Posted by Scott | March 1, 2007 .

I was planning on covering a few of the web browers available on the Mac and decided just to do one big one to include them all. Below is a quick run down of a few of the most popular browsers you can use to surf around the inter tubes.

Safari

OSX’s built in browser created by Apple themselves. Personally I dont like Safari as it tends to render pages differently than intended and its not very customizable. One thing that I do really like about Safari is its ability to handle RSS feeds. When you are on a site and RSS is detected you will get the RSS icon in the address bar. When you click on it, Safari will strip out all of the extra nonsense and make it a clean and easy page to read everything that your interested in, and nothing your not. The ability to shorten or lengthen the excerpts displayed in RSS view is also a nice feature that really lets you see everything available in a clean and concise manner. Safari Website

Firefox

By now, everyone has heard of Firefox. Even my parents know what Firefox is and use it over IE on their PC. Firefox is in my opinion the best browser of choice on OS X. The browser is quick, safe, secure, and all that good stuff, but the main factor of Firefox is its custimization. The community behind Firefox is huge and there’s a plugin that will do just about anything you can even imagine (mouse gestures is my favorite). In my opinion Firefox is all you will ever need on the Mac. Firefox Website

Camino

Camino is strange to me. It’s built on the same foundation as Firefox, it looks like Firefox, and it doesnt do anything that Firefox doesnt. Its little claim to fame is that it is built specifically for OS X. Wow, who cares. Its a stripped down version of Firefox without the community behind it creating the great plug-ins and themes to go along with it. Check it out if you want, but in my opinion its a waste of time. Someone please proove me wrong though if you think otherwise. Camino Website

Flock

Flock is the social web browser. When I first heard of this browser I thought it had real potential It looked cool, and it had the added social media (such as MySpace) features that have all but taken over the web. Flock integrates Flickr photo accounts very well and allows you to share your own photos with minimal effort. I used Flock once or twice when it was first coming out in its Beta stages and wasnt all that impressed just because of the lack of plugins/themes. Flock is still early in its development and I think over time it could be a pretty good browser. Flock Website

Flock has all that Firefox has, plus more .

And if you want to use extensions designed for Firefox in Flock, you can. I use a lot of extensions this way .

BTW, I also found, but have not yet tried, flock’d - which converts a Firefox extension into a Flock extension through the Flock’d website

    Kind Regards,
