MacTheRipper | DVD Ripping & Extracting in OS X

Mac the Ripper DVD Backup Software

I posted a few days back about Handbrake for Mac for backing up your DVDs. Following up that post with another popular DVD back up application for OS X, I give you Mac the Ripper. MacTheRipper is a free DVD ripper, copier, backer upper, whatever you want to call it, for OS X. Using various codecs, Mac The Ripper is able to make a perfect backup of any commercial or personal DVD minus the copyright protection or region locks that may or may not be in place. I’ve tested Mac the Ripper out one of my DVDs and I have to say it is one of the easiest applications out there to use for backing up your beloved DVDs such as Lost Season 3.

As expected with all Mac applications, the user interface is simple and intuitive. You put the DVD in the drive, fire up MacTheRipper it will read the disc and then you hit “Go”. Thats it. After about 2 hours (depending on how long the dvd is) you will have the typicall Video_TS and Audio_TS folders where you designated to the save the DVD. Once the DVD is backed up on your Mac, you can then use VLC Media player to watch it on your computer, or one of the various burning applications such as Disco to burn it to a blank DVD-R(w).

Between Handbrake and MacTheRipper there shouldn’t be a DVD out there that gives you trouble with making a back up copy, but these 2 applications should only be used on DVDs that you own, and only for personal back up purposes.

Download MacTheRipper and make backup your DVDs to your Mac for safekeeping.

I agree with everything you say about MTR except for the time it takes to work.

Even the longest dual-layer commercial DVDs take little more than 30 minutes to get ready for burning - and I am using an old 1.25GHz G4 eMac. Many DVDs are much quicker.
