iStumbler | Mac WiFi Detection Tool

Posted by Scott | March 27, 2007 .

iStumber is a free wireless network detection tool for OS X that is able to detect Apple Airport networks, bluetooth devices, as well as Bonjour services on your Mac. iStumbler presents some pretty good information regarding each of the available networks such as SSIDs, whether it is a secure network or open, as well as the signal strength.

Using applications like iStumbler can really question your morality depending on your feelings on open networks. Do you say “hey theres an open network available in my apartment that I dont pay for. Oh well they should know better than to leave it unprotected”, or do you say “hmm its dishonest to use other peoples networks without their permission”. Other than private networks, there are many hotspots popping up in cities all over the place which you are welcome to hop on and use for free whenever you like. Google is creating city wide Wifi networks in areas such as LA. Hopefully Google will pick the happening town of Morrisville NC sooner than later.

All in all iStumbler is a solid Wifi detection tool for OS X and is by far one of the more popular ones. If you have a laptop and are always on the go, then iStumbler may be a great addition to your Applications folder.

Download iStumbler to find and detect wireless networks on Mac OS X.
