iPod Rip - Copy Songs from iPod to Computer

Posted by Scott | February 9, 2007 .

iPod Rip

I’ll start this post off with the disclaimer that I do not encourage or condone the act of copying songs that you do not own. That said, my next favorite peice of software is called iPod Rip and it does exactly what it says, rips the songs from an iPod and copies them to your computer. iPod Rip can come in handy for many different situations. Say you buy a new computer and you want to transfer all of your songs over. You could burn a bunch of blank cds, you can use an external harddrive if you have one, or you can just use your iPod that already has a copy of your songs on it and iPod rip to copy them over. Another great use of this software is if your computer crashes and you are unable to get your songs off before it happens. iPod rip is there to save the day restoring all of your songs back on your computer once its back up (as long as you had all the songs on the iPod).

iPod rip doesnt stop at music though, it supports any file that your iPod supports such as video and photos, and all of the meta data associated with them such as title, artist, and all that good stuff. The interface looks alot like iTunes so using it is pretty self explanitory if your used to iTunes.

iPod Rip Screenshot
With drag and drop to copy individual files, or a Sync all function to move the entire contents of the iPod over, this is one of the best back up solutions for use with the iPod available. It comes with a free trial, but once its up the cost is $14.95. There is also a PC version of the software available as well.

i have I Rip, i downloaded the software and have it on my desktop. i click on it and it asks me to plug in my pod, i do this then it comes up with a caution messeage saying it might not be able to do it, but it will proceed anyway. then a loading bar comes up saying connecting to pod. then i leave it for a while and it does nothing for me?
    what am i doing wrong?
when i click on irip there is no menu or anything, it just asks me to plug in pod. then i do and nothing happens…..help!

Kenny, are you using iRip or iPod Rip. These are 2 different applications. If your using iPod Rip then first go here http://www.thelittleappfactory.com/support/ipodrip.php and make sure you iPod is on the list of compatible versions. Also go through the documents to see if it answers your problem. I haven’t had that problem whenever I’ve used it. Hope this helps.

I downloaded IPod Rip and when I click on the icon to finish installation all I get in the Setup Wizard is the option to either repair or remove IPod Rip. I have tried ‘repair’ a couple of times, still nothing. I am installing it on my external hard drive where I have also downloaded Itunes. Therein lies another question once I do get Rip to start working: should I copy my music to Itunes or just a file on my hard drive? I do this because at this time I don’t have my own computer; I am using a borrowed one with my external drive.
    Thanks!

  4. Scott April 14, 2007 11:11 am

    Marti,

If I am reading that correctly, it sounds like you are trying to install iPodRip on your external HD. This will not work as there is no operating system there. It must be installed on the internal HD where either OS X or Windows is installed. You will have to copy the songs to the internal HD and then you can copy them to the external drive and delete from internal if you want.

  5. Marti April 14, 2007 12:08 pm

You are right; that’s what I was trying to do. If there is not Itunes installed on the internal HD, can I still use Ipod Rip to copy the music from my Ipod to that HD, and then move the music to my external HD where I have Itunes installed? Will I be using Ipod Rip to move the music between HDs; if not, will I be able just to move the music with no problems. Again, thanks

  6. Scott April 14, 2007 7:06 pm

iTunes isnt needed. Just download iPod rip to the desktop, double click on it and run through the install. Once its installed and running plug your iPod in and copy the songs to a folder on your desktop. Once thats finished drag the folder on the desktop to your external drive.

  7. mikie April 20, 2007 12:41 pm

Ipod rip will not work for me. gives me the same message as Marti. I click continue and it tells me importing Ipod data and doesnt do anything else. What can i do to fix this. I have not installed itunes on my laptop and im trying to recover my songs from my ipod. How long does it take to download 900 songs from ipod.

  8. Scott April 20, 2007 6:11 pm

Not sure where you guys are running into the error, I’ve never had a problem getting it to work on at least 3 different computers. As an alternative check out Senuti and see if you are able to get that to work for you.

Copying 900 songs can take quite a while. 30 minutes to an hour probably.

Hi, I am getting the same problem. Everytime I try to start iPodRip it gives me an unexpected error notice that the “Argument ‘length’ must be greater or equal to zero.” I choose continue but nothing happens. Please if anyone has a solution, can you email aaakel@yahoo.com I do not want to lose all my songs. Thanks.

  12. Scott April 29, 2007 5:47 pm

    Hi All,

I’ve written a new post that covers many alternatives to iPodRip that allow you to copy all of your songs from an iPod back to your computer.

If your having trouble getting iPodRip to work then look into these

Hi there, i have downloaded the ipod rp product. it is exactly what i have been lookin for but when i go to install it. it says my computer needs a .net thing. so i clicked yes and downloaded the windows .net application and it will still not install…can anyone help?

  14. Scott April 30, 2007 5:51 pm

    Con,

What version of Windows are you running? I’ve had a bit of difficulty getting it to run when I got the message to download the .net framework like you did.

If you cant get it to work, check out the alternatives with the link I posted 2 comments up.

  15. dougiefresh May 17, 2007 11:39 am

I have the same probles other users have described above. “Argument length equals zero”. If I ignore it then Ipodrip just says “loading” forever and nothing happens.I am not sure that this app really works on windows even though they say the app I downloaded was designed fro windows…

  16. Anonymous May 19, 2007 3:00 pm

Once again, same porblems as other users. It says it is “Loading iPod Data” but is doing nothing.

  17. Kittah May 19, 2007 11:44 pm

I am havimg the exact same problem as the others. No menu, same error mssg, then loading ipod data, but nothing happens. Have the video ipod, and am using windows. My previous computer crashed and am now trying to load my poor ipod onto the new computer. Arrrrghgghgh!!! Doomed!!!

    Same error here,

Had it on an XP machine and it worked fine, now 6 months later I get that error and nothing happens.

Sent a message to ‘Rip ’s support, just waiting to see if they have heard of anything.

Is it a possible windows update?

  20. Scott May 24, 2007 11:00 pm

It may very well be a windows update or an iTunes update that is causing the problem with ipod rip in windows. I have used it now on 4 different macs and never had one second of trouble.

Hi. My computer crashed and am attempting recover my music and put it on my new computer. I too got the “zero” message. Right now it says it’s loading iPod data and my iPod says do not disconnect - does this mean it’s actually doing something? If not, what will happen if I disconnect the iPod? Thanks!

did this program actually work for anyone without any problems? and does ipod rip also carry over the album artwork?

  28. Pianodisc Player August 6, 2007 7:48 pm

I purchased a piano with a pianodisc player. The piano store provided an iPod with many files/songs loaded on the iPod that play on the piano. The files/songs were loaded from a computer with a Mac OS. I assume that this means that the iPod is formatted to work with a Mac OS.

I have a Windows PC and would like to pull these songs off of the iPod and into iTunes on my Windows PC, reformat the iPod and then put the songs back onto the iPod.

Will this product allow me to pull the songs off of a Mac OS formatted iPod and into a Windows PC iTunes?

  29. Scott August 6, 2007 7:52 pm

    Pianodisc Player,

It should work. I have used the software to rip from a Windows formatted iPod to a Mac, but havent ever tried going from a Mac formatted iPod to Windows.

Many people seem to be having trouble with iPodRip, but its definetly worth a shot. If that one doesnt work try one of the multiple others I posted about.

  30. Pianodisc Player August 7, 2007 8:40 pm

When I downloaded iPod Rip and started the program, it gave me a message that the iPod was formatted for Mac OS as opposed to Windows. It then asked me if I would like to reformat the iPod for Windows.

I was concerned that doing so would have deleted all of the songs that were loaded on the iPod so I cancelled this.

Does this mean that iPod Rip will not allow me to pull songs off of an iPod that is formatted for a Mac OS and into a Windows PC?

  31. emiglia August 28, 2007 4:31 pm

I tried to use this, and now all my songs are messed up and my computer won’t read my iPod anymore. Did I lose all my music?

  32. itzawrap September 13, 2007 1:16 pm

I’ve had iPod Rip for several years and recently I bought a new MacBook Pro. Re-installed my purchased copy of iPod Rip and it will not see the database on my G3 iPod anymore.

I reset the entire iPod and copied a playlist fresh to the iPod and tried iPod Rip again. No luck, same message: You have a new iPod or the database is corrupt.

I’ve written to thelittleappfactory folks 3 times now for advice and I get no answer; silence; Nada!

These guys have totally flaked out on their software.

Yesterday I bought PodWorks for $8 and it works fine. And it’s easy. One slight glitch though, a -54 error on a few songs when transferring 269 songs back into iTunes. Had to clear a dialog alert box. But the songs (2 of them) still transferred fine.

If anyone knows where the guys at The Little App Factory went on vacation I’d like to know…….

  33. Homer DJW September 16, 2007 3:30 pm

still awaiting their reply but have heard nothing yet.

I hope they haven’t abandoned this as I did pay for it and it is an amazing product that used to just work!

  36. Wmc November 30, 2007 10:38 pm

iPod Rip Off is more like it - it won’t recognize and iPod through Leopard. It keeps giving a message that the iPod must be new or empty. A waste of 20 bucks!

  37. Homer DJW December 28, 2007 2:25 pm

I have now stopped using this as it doesn’t work and the staff seem to have abandoned it.

As I purchased the unlimited version I want my money back as this was supposed to include support.

I have a mac book pro and an ipod which had all its tunes put on with windows format. Is it possible for me to use ipod rip or something similar to take the music from the ipod onto my mac? Or can it simply not be done because of the different formats?

  46. asher June 18, 2008 9:42 pm

Every time I try to open the iPod Rip application, a dialog window pops up saying my iPod is either new or corrupted and asking if I want a Hard Recover… but iTunes is reading the data as normal and my playback continues to function normally.

    Thoughts?
