iPod Rip – Copy Songs from iPod to Computer

iPod Rip

I’ll start this post off with the disclaimer that I do not encourage or condone the act of copying songs that you do not own. That said, my next favorite peice of software is called iPod Rip and it does exactly what it says, rips the songs from an iPod and copies them to your computer. iPod Rip can come in handy for many different situations. Say you buy a new computer and you want to transfer all of your songs over. You could burn a bunch of blank cds, you can use an external harddrive if you have one, or you can just use your iPod that already has a copy of your songs on it and iPod rip to copy them over. Another great use of this software is if your computer crashes and you are unable to get your songs off before it happens. iPod rip is there to save the day restoring all of your songs back on your computer once its back up (as long as you had all the songs on the iPod).

iPod rip doesnt stop at music though, it supports any file that your iPod supports such as video and photos, and all of the meta data associated with them such as title, artist, and all that good stuff. The interface looks alot like iTunes so using it is pretty self explanitory if your used to iTunes.

iPod Rip Screenshot
With drag and drop to copy individual files, or a Sync all function to move the entire contents of the iPod over, this is one of the best back up solutions for use with the iPod available. It comes with a free trial, but once its up the cost is $14.95. There is also a PC version of the software available as well.

  1. i have I Rip, i downloaded the software and have it on my desktop. i click on it and it asks me to plug in my pod, i do this then it comes up with a caution messeage saying it might not be able to do it, but it will proceed anyway. then a loading bar comes up saying connecting to pod. then i leave it for a while and it does nothing for me?
    what am i doing wrong?
when i click on irip there is no menu or anything, it just asks me to plug in pod. then i do and nothing happens…..help!

  2. Kenny, are you using iRip or iPod Rip. These are 2 different applications. If your using iPod Rip then first go here http://www.thelittleappfactory.com/support/ipodrip.php and make sure you iPod is on the list of compatible versions. Also go through the documents to see if it answers your problem. I haven’t had that problem whenever I’ve used it. Hope this helps.

  3. I downloaded IPod Rip and when I click on the icon to finish installation all I get in the Setup Wizard is the option to either repair or remove IPod Rip. I have tried ‘repair’ a couple of times, still nothing. I am installing it on my external hard drive where I have also downloaded Itunes. Therein lies another question once I do get Rip to start working: should I copy my music to Itunes or just a file on my hard drive? I do this because at this time I don’t have my own computer; I am using a borrowed one with my external drive.
    Thanks!

  4. Marti,

If I am reading that correctly, it sounds like you are trying to install iPodRip on your external HD. This will not work as there is no operating system there. It must be installed on the internal HD where either OS X or Windows is installed. You will have to copy the songs to the internal HD and then you can copy them to the external drive and delete from internal if you want.

  5. You are right; that’s what I was trying to do. If there is not Itunes installed on the internal HD, can I still use Ipod Rip to copy the music from my Ipod to that HD, and then move the music to my external HD where I have Itunes installed? Will I be using Ipod Rip to move the music between HDs; if not, will I be able just to move the music with no problems. Again, thanks

  6. iTunes isnt needed. Just download iPod rip to the desktop, double click on it and run through the install. Once its installed and running plug your iPod in and copy the songs to a folder on your desktop. Once thats finished drag the folder on the desktop to your external drive.

  7. Ipod rip will not work for me. gives me the same message as Marti. I click continue and it tells me importing Ipod data and doesnt do anything else. What can i do to fix this. I have not installed itunes on my laptop and im trying to recover my songs from my ipod. How long does it take to download 900 songs from ipod.

  8. Not sure where you guys are running into the error, I’ve never had a problem getting it to work on at least 3 different computers. As an alternative check out Senuti and see if you are able to get that to work for you.

Copying 900 songs can take quite a while. 30 minutes to an hour probably.

  9. i nedd it

  10. thank you

  11. Hi, I am getting the same problem. Everytime I try to start iPodRip it gives me an unexpected error notice that the “Argument ‘length’ must be greater or equal to zero.” I choose continue but nothing happens. Please if anyone has a solution, can you email aaakel@yahoo.com I do not want to lose all my songs. Thanks.

  12. Hi All,

I’ve written a new post that covers many alternatives to iPodRip that allow you to copy all of your songs from an iPod back to your computer.

If your having trouble getting iPodRip to work then look into these

    iPod Rip Alternatives

  13. Hi there, i have downloaded the ipod rp product. it is exactly what i have been lookin for but when i go to install it. it says my computer needs a .net thing. so i clicked yes and downloaded the windows .net application and it will still not install…can anyone help?

  14. Con,

What version of Windows are you running? I’ve had a bit of difficulty getting it to run when I got the message to download the .net framework like you did.

If you cant get it to work, check out the alternatives with the link I posted 2 comments up.

  15. I have the same probles other users have described above. “Argument length equals zero”. If I ignore it then Ipodrip just says “loading” forever and nothing happens.I am not sure that this app really works on windows even though they say the app I downloaded was designed fro windows…

  16. Once again, same porblems as other users. It says it is “Loading iPod Data” but is doing nothing.

  17. I am havimg the exact same problem as the others. No menu, same error mssg, then loading ipod data, but nothing happens. Have the video ipod, and am using windows. My previous computer crashed and am now trying to load my poor ipod onto the new computer. Arrrrghgghgh!!! Doomed!!!

  18. OK, many of you are having problems with iPod rip on windows. Please go here and try these instead.

    copy iPod on Windows

  19. Same error here,

Had it on an XP machine and it worked fine, now 6 months later I get that error and nothing happens.

Sent a message to ‘Rip ’s support, just waiting to see if they have heard of anything.

Is it a possible windows update?

  20. It may very well be a windows update or an iTunes update that is causing the problem with ipod rip in windows. I have used it now on 4 different macs and never had one second of trouble.

  27. did this program actually work for anyone without any problems? and does ipod rip also carry over the album artwork?

  28. Pianodisc Player on August 6th, 2007 at 7:48 pm

I purchased a piano with a pianodisc player. The piano store provided an iPod with many files/songs loaded on the iPod that play on the piano. The files/songs were loaded from a computer with a Mac OS. I assume that this means that the iPod is formatted to work with a Mac OS.

I have a Windows PC and would like to pull these songs off of the iPod and into iTunes on my Windows PC, reformat the iPod and then put the songs back onto the iPod.

Will this product allow me to pull the songs off of a Mac OS formatted iPod and into a Windows PC iTunes?

  29. Pianodisc Player,

It should work. I have used the software to rip from a Windows formatted iPod to a Mac, but havent ever tried going from a Mac formatted iPod to Windows.

Many people seem to be having trouble with iPodRip, but its definetly worth a shot. If that one doesnt work try one of the multiple others I posted about.

  30. Pianodisc Player on August 7th, 2007 at 8:40 pm

When I downloaded iPod Rip and started the program, it gave me a message that the iPod was formatted for Mac OS as opposed to Windows. It then asked me if I would like to reformat the iPod for Windows.

I was concerned that doing so would have deleted all of the songs that were loaded on the iPod so I cancelled this.

Does this mean that iPod Rip will not allow me to pull songs off of an iPod that is formatted for a Mac OS and into a Windows PC?

  31. I tried to use this, and now all my songs are messed up and my computer won’t read my iPod anymore. Did I lose all my music?

  32. I’ve had iPod Rip for several years and recently I bought a new MacBook Pro. Re-installed my purchased copy of iPod Rip and it will not see the database on my G3 iPod anymore.

I reset the entire iPod and copied a playlist fresh to the iPod and tried iPod Rip again. No luck, same message: You have a new iPod or the database is corrupt.

I’ve written to thelittleappfactory folks 3 times now for advice and I get no answer; silence; Nada!

These guys have totally flaked out on their software.

Yesterday I bought PodWorks for $8 and it works fine. And it’s easy. One slight glitch though, a -54 error on a few songs when transferring 269 songs back into iTunes. Had to clear a dialog alert box. But the songs (2 of them) still transferred fine.

If anyone knows where the guys at The Little App Factory went on vacation I’d like to know…….

  33. still awaiting their reply but have heard nothing yet.

I hope they haven’t abandoned this as I did pay for it and it is an amazing product that used to just work!

  35. i have the same problem “Arguement Length must be Greater than or Equal to Zero ” has anybody found a solution?

  36. iPod Rip Off is more like it – it won’t recognize and iPod through Leopard. It keeps giving a message that the iPod must be new or empty. A waste of 20 bucks!

  37. I have now stopped using this as it doesn’t work and the staff seem to have abandoned it.

As I purchased the unlimited version I want my money back as this was supposed to include support.

  38. I have a mac book pro and an ipod which had all its tunes put on with windows format. Is it possible for me to use ipod rip or something similar to take the music from the ipod onto my mac? Or can it simply not be done because of the different formats?

  39. hi, my pc crashed and i got a mac now. how do i use i pod rip without deleting my music on my i pod. because the i pod is in a windows format and it says i need to delete and sync.

  40. this sucks. it didnt not worked. lame. durrrr

  41. I have an ipod video. My ipod wasn’t hooked up to the computer when it crashed. We had to delete everything on the computer. Now when we hook it up it says that a library already exists. Then it askes if i want to erase this ipod and sync with this library.WHAT DO I DO !!!!!

  42. I want to copy the song from my iPOD to my new computer.
When i connected the Ipod i can see all the song on IpodRip but then iTunes asked if i would like to switch this iPOD to my computer Itunes as the iPOD linked to another iTunes.

  46. Every time I try to open the iPod Rip application, a dialog window pops up saying my iPod is either new or corrupted and asking if I want a Hard Recover… but iTunes is reading the data as normal and my playback continues to function normally.

    Thoughts?

  47. Website not found. Has it been Deleted?

What software is the best to use for a PC to rip songs from my ipod to the computer…Thanks

  50. iPodRip will not open with Leopard!! MF

  51. Oh it totally works, just open iTunes, unplug and plug in the iPod and it starts transferring!!

  52. my ipod is formated for windows and all my songs are on my pc and on my ipod. i know that you can transfer all files from ur ipod to mac by using ipod rip. However once u transfer ur songs from ur ipod to your mac are you then able to upload new songs from cds from your mac to ur ipod?

  53. fyi, ipod rip does NOT support windows! it says so under the help tab of their website.

  54. ipod rip is amazing! I recovered all my songs for free. They let you download 200 tracks from your ipod by just downloading a free program. I downloaded the program in 30 seconds, and in ten minutes I had my library back!

  55. Check out Riptune.com to do this manually, its really easy and fast. The steps are very easy to follow too.
    http://www.riptune.com

  56. how the bloody hell can i get this fucking ipodrip and copy to itunes for free

  57. So I’ve used iPod Rip several times and it worked just fine – it never recognized the iPod like it is supposed to, but I do a hard recover and get all the songs. (btw, I have a mac) So I go over to My buddy’s and try to get all the 16,000 songs off his iPod and it transfers 15,000 and change and then locks up. So I quit iPod Rip and eject the iPod and ALL OF THE SONGS ARE GONE FROM HIS IPOD!!!! This truly sucks for him because I guess he didn’t have all of them backed up on his PC, like only 9,000 out of 16,000!!! So no matter what I do the ipod is empty and the worst part is, out of 15,000 and change, only 6,000 are actually importing into iTunes. I guess all of those files are corrupted and all those songs lost… and it’s my fault.

  58. I just bought a used iPod and its loaded with a bunch of great stuff, songs and movies. Its registered to the original owner’s iTunes account so I can’t open an iTunes account and delete or save the songs or movies I want without wiping the whole iPod and starting all over. Will this rip software allow me to delete and save the files I want without having to start all over again?

  59. I have the new version of Ipod Rip on my computer- I picked up a new ipod and I want to selectively put some of the songs on the new ipod from my itunes library- how do I do this?

  60. i use senuti

  63. okay i downloaded iPod Rip and installed it, then when it came to the registration part i had no idea what to do especially the liscense code…where do u get the code from?
    please help me!

  64. I don’t understand why people complain when the free version doesn’t work the way they want it to, when it’s “free” .. why not just pay the $14.95 or $19.95 or whatever it is, and get the full version.
It’s such a small price to pay, to get your Itunes library back! I think anyhow.

  65. Melanie Caiazza on January 16th, 2009 at 1:13 pm

    Mariam,
I believe, If you kept the e-mail that IPODRIP sent you after you paid the licensing fee, there should be a link in that e-mail, that if you click on it, will open the program, and fill in the registration number automatically. I bought the program about 6 months ago, and seem to remember that was how it worked.

  66. Pleeeeeeeeease. All of these types of programs are fake.

  67. Hi,
Thanks in advance for helping me out with this…
I’d like to copy my songs from my Mac formatted I-Pod to my PC.
Is I-Pod Rip able to do this or does the I-Pod have to be the same format as the computer?
If I-Pod Rip can do this is there anything additional I need to know?
    Thanks heaps
    Ella

This ipod rip can’t transfer your mac format ipod to your pc.You can find an windows one. 69. If I download the iPod Rip is there any viruses with it?

  70. external hd that had all my music on it died so i bought ipodrip.

i transferred all my songs from ipod to my new external hd. told itunes where my new library is found on the external hd. when i play a song in itunes i get the exclamation mark and message that the song can’t be found

i look in the itunes music folder on my external hd and see that all the songs from my ipod have been dumped into this folder, there are no Artist or Album folders, just a list of thousands of songs. even bigger problem is, the song titles are no longer there, they have been replaced by nonsense four letter gibberish like XVGH.

any ideas on what happened and what i can do to fix this? i’m on a pc, w/ windows xp. hopefully that doesn’t preclude me from finding help here.

    thanks!

  71. I lost my 7,500 song library. I know stupid….I was going to buy an external hardrive to back it up but procrastinated. My question is, if I purchase the ipod rip, can I upload and restore my itunes library?

  72. Be careful! Don’t buy iPodRip until you’re sure it will work on your machine. It doesn’t work with new 8G iPods, so don’t waste your $$$ if you’ve got one of these machines. Apple has made it harder to copy songs.

  86. As we all know, iTunes can only transfer the files to iPod. Recently, our computer crashed and all of the files on iTunes was gone, but they are still in my iPod. I spent over 6 hours trying to find out how to transfer my ipod files to my PC and the emepty iTunes. I thought it would be a good idea to make a tutorial for iPod fans who was confused by how to transfer songs, videos, photos and playlist etc. from iPod to computer or iTunes!!!! hahaa
