Handbrake | Mac DVD Ripping Made Easy
Handbrake for Mac is a DVD video copying application that makes it easy enough for just about anyone who can turn a computer on to rip, I mean backup, a DVD to their hard drive. Handbrake supports video sources such as VIDEO_TS, DVD Images, and real DVDs (including encrypted) and allows you to back up the data in just a couple of clicks. With Handbrake you can backup the video in either MP4, AVI, OGM, MPEG-4, and even the new HD Codec H.264. Handbrake does more than just video though, it also handles audio with no problem. Backup your music in AAC, MP3, Vorbis, or AC-3.
A few great features packed into Handbrake is DVD other than the multitude of file formats it supports in both importing and exporting are the choice of picture format such as fullscreen or halfscreen, preserving subtitles and even chapter selection. Quite a few of the backup apps out there will strip these out making finding certain spots in a dvd a little cumbersome.
Handbrake is currently at version 0.7.1 and is free for both Mac and Linux. A windows port is being worked on and scheduled to be released in the near future.

Your web page says that Handbrake is at V 0.7.1,
But when I click to download I get taken to the Handbrake site where there is only V 0.9.1 which is OSX 10.5 only.
As I have OSX 10.3.9, I was hoping that the earlier version would be supported by my OS.
Is there ANY place iIcan download the earlier version???

Hi, my family and I are quite new to computers but over the last 6 months have become obsessed with our new intel Mac OSX 10.5.8 We have learnt a great deal from your site; (we are still quite ignorant to Windows PC, which sometimes makes things difficult). While we have been having lots of fun & learning at the same time, our kids are picking things up faster than my wife and I, (We are in our 50’s); one thing we have not been able to achive is burning AVI movies to DVD-R discs. Can you please recommend a program that can do this for us that will suit our computer? The programs that we have downloaded have caused us ongoing problems; taking into account that down here in New Zealand we may be a bit backward but we are trying our best to keep up with the modern word.
