Handbrake | Mac DVD Ripping Made Easy
Handbrake for Mac is a DVD video copying application that makes it easy enough for just about anyone who can turn a computer on to rip, I mean backup, a DVD to their hard drive. Handbrake supports video sources such as VIDEO_TS, DVD Images, and real DVDs (including encrypted) and allows you to back up the data in just a couple of clicks. With Handbrake you can backup the video in either MP4, AVI, OGM, MPEG-4, and even the new HD Codec H.264. Handbrake does more than just video though, it also handles audio with no problem. Backup your music in AAC, MP3, Vorbis, or AC-3.
A few great features packed into Handbrake is DVD other than the multitude of file formats it supports in both importing and exporting are the choice of picture format such as fullscreen or halfscreen, preserving subtitles and even chapter selection. Quite a few of the backup apps out there will strip these out making finding certain spots in a dvd a little cumbersome.
Handbrake is currently at version 0.7.1 and is free for both Mac and Linux. A windows port is being worked on and scheduled to be released in the near future.
