Get Tube | Download YouTube Videos and Audio Files to Your Mac

Posted by Scott | April 4, 2007 .

get tube: download youtube videosFirst of all, sorry for the lack of posts this week, it’s been very busy with work.  I’m going to be out of town in NY next week for SES so I probably wont post much, if at all then either.  I will be back and start the daily posts up again once I’m back though.

With that out of the way, I have been saving up applications to write about in my RSS feeds and Get Tube seemed like a good place to start.  Get Tube is an alternative to TubeSock that allows you to download both video and audio files from Youtube to your Mac hard drive.

Their webpage kinda sucks as its only one page and basically just says that Get tube is a tool for downloading you tube videos.  The website was however made with iWeb….so bonus points to them.

To use Get Tube just copy and paste the URL of the You Tube video and press “get”.  You will then be asked to select a destination and then the output format.  Choose mp3 for audio only, or choose mp4 to download the complete youtube video.  Hit OK and your all done.

Download Get Tube to download You Tube Vidoes on a Mac.

I place the YouTube link into the box properly, but then The second box doesn’t appear. It just displays a Get Tube bar, with a bar loading, that goes nowhere.

    Hi Kailey,

When you open GetTube, go to the menu bar and go into the preferences. Pick your destination that you want to save the video to, and select m4a for video or mp3 for audio only. Once you press the Get button you will get the loading bar and it will take it a while to download depending on the length of the video.

    Dana,

Sorry to hear, this isn’t working for you either. Stay tuned for a post I have coming up. It is a free alternative that will allow you to download Youtube videos. I will post it in the next day or so.

    Hi,

Thanks for this program. But I’m having the same problem as Kailey - after entering the Youtube link and clicking the ‘Get’ button the loading bar comes on until it times out. I haven’t seen the second box yet
    :-( Any suggestions?

  9. NG August 15, 2007 7:42 am

yaaay! I got it to work after much persistence. thanks again for an awesome program!

  10. Sean August 17, 2007 10:58 am

NG, how did you get it to work!!!?

  11. Scott August 17, 2007 2:07 pm

Most likely he just let it sit for a long time. The way that it downloads the video is it basically has to play the entire video. It doesnt show it doing this but instead looks like its just sitting there doing nothing. If you want to test it to make sure you are doing it right try it on a really short video first.

This app just doesn’t work on my MacBook Pro. I do get a file downloaded but it’s a 4kb QuickTime file that no application can open.

Let’s move on to some other application that works.

  13. Scott September 16, 2007 5:59 pm

Dono what to tell ya. I’ve used it multiple times for both video and for just audio and its worked everytime.

  14. Paul September 21, 2007 11:08 am

I am now having the same issue with the downloaded file is 4k and of course it does not work. I think after a VLC upgrade the app stopped fuctioning. It worked great a couple of months ago.

  15. bwr248 September 24, 2007 2:41 pm

Used to work great, then NOTHING. All I get now is a message:
An invalid public movie atom was found in the movie.

    Any ideas?

I’m using Zamzar. It may be cumbersome, but it WORKS everytime.

I have downloaded getTube. When I press getTube cart on it, a window comes up saying choose where the firefox.app is! I dont know what that is. After I have chosen the right thing, what do I do after that? I am confused

  17. ofenby December 31, 2007 10:04 pm

Sorry, but where do I find the Get button? I downloaded app. It’s in my menu, but there’s no instruction about where to go from there. Thanks!

  18. 123tobe January 5, 2008 9:16 am

I had a wrong download file! Only 208 KB. The real download file is 2,2 MB.

So the program was not fully installed. Maybe you have the same problem so I recommend this link:

    http://mac.softpedia.com/progDownload/Get-Tube-Download-24498.html

This one worked perfectly for me with Safari.

  19. Ryan April 16, 2008 11:59 pm

This program is foul .. it wont even get past the internet browser selection.

Why doesn’t anything ever work, fuckin shit.

  20. musolen April 24, 2008 6:39 pm

Yeah I agree with Ryan it’s crap. It’s so crude it either works or it doesn’t. In my case it just gives me a choice of Safari or Firefox. I click on either and it thinks about something for a couple of seconds then nothing. Every time. Tried re-downloading the app, checked every setting (that took about 10 seconds) restarted browser, restarted mac. It doesn’t work. It is too crude. Nada.

  21. Scott April 24, 2008 8:08 pm

    It works fine. Everytime.

Install VLC. Run the GetTube, pick your browser, and WAIT. It takes a while to work. Dont wait 30 seconds. Wait 5-10 minutes.

  22. Ami April 25, 2008 6:22 pm

This doesn’t seem to work, tried all the suggestions….:~(
    sorry.

YouTubeRobot.com today announces YouTube Robot 2.0, a tool that enables you to download video from YouTube.com onto your PC, convert it to various formats to watch it when you are on the road on mobile devices like mobile phone, iPod, iPhone, Pocket PC, PSP, or Zune.

YouTube Robot allows you to search for videos using keywords or browse video by category, author, channel, language, tags, etc. When you find something noteworthy, you can preview the video right in YouTube Robot and then download it onto the hard disk drive. The speed, at which you will be downloading, is very high: up to 5 times faster than other software when you download a single file and up to 4 times faster when you download multiple files at a time.

Manual download is not the only option with YouTube Robot. You may as well schedule the download and conversion tasks to be executed automatically, even when you are not around. Downloading is followed by conversion to the format of your choice and uploading videos to a mobile device (if needed). For example, you can plug in iPod, select the video, go to bed, and when you wake up next morning, your iPod will be ready to play new YouTube videos.

  25. Bob May 26, 2008 4:55 pm

Where dose it save your video to? I did the download thing and it said it was done but I can’t find the files. HELP?PLEASE!

  26. Xarg June 2, 2008 4:44 pm

    Hai! I found a solution:
This prog checks title link in your chosen browser and if it is a supported format( the short link in the youtube/more info/URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W2lic06oQvs and no longer) than it puts it into the cart, than begin download. the bar only shows 0%, 50% and 100% so be patient

    bye Xarg

  28. Douglas Gill June 3, 2008 3:17 am

Your suggestion is great works brilliant as you say, but I cannot find the download - anywhere? It is not in the folder I created for downloads, so am mystified. Any idea’s?

  29. Janneke June 3, 2008 11:20 am

I get the small screen to choose firefox/safari, I click firefox and nothing happens, I’m probably doing something wrong, but I dont know what, so please help

  30. Janneke June 3, 2008 11:25 am

okay, I think I figured it out

  31. Janneke June 3, 2008 11:34 am

so when it’s done, where do the videos go? where can I find them back

  32. Janneke June 3, 2008 11:47 am

where do the downloads go to when you’ve downloaded? same problem as Bob

  33. Dom June 7, 2008 3:28 am

    Hi there
I have been trying to get GetTube to work like the others on this page and have had the same problems, you do have to wait several minutes (while it seems nothing is happening), then it just starts downloading the file. Now I have the same problem as the last guy, getting to the file in iTunes. I have found them listed in the “purchased” folder of iTunes, but they are “greyed out” so I cannot open them (and they do not show at all in the iTunes window). Any thoughts on how I can get them to list like all the other songs and vid? Thanks Dom

  34. Janneke June 7, 2008 3:58 pm

girl here, my mother language isn’t english, so I’m even having trouble finding the purchased folder and understanding all the terms you guys use…

so I waited and it started downloading, then it was finished and I couldnt find the downloaded file back…so what is it called? and how do you make it .avi when you find it?

  35. Anonymous July 12, 2008 5:31 pm

I want one that does bulk jobs!!
