Get Tube | Download YouTube Videos and Audio Files to Your Mac
First of all, sorry for the lack of posts this week, it’s been very busy with work. I’m going to be out of town in NY next week for SES so I probably wont post much, if at all then either. I will be back and start the daily posts up again once I’m back though.
With that out of the way, I have been saving up applications to write about in my RSS feeds and Get Tube seemed like a good place to start. Get Tube is an alternative to TubeSock that allows you to download both video and audio files from Youtube to your Mac hard drive.
Their webpage kinda sucks as its only one page and basically just says that Get tube is a tool for downloading you tube videos. The website was however made with iWeb….so bonus points to them.

To use Get Tube just copy and paste the URL of the You Tube video and press “get”. You will then be asked to select a destination and then the output format. Choose mp3 for audio only, or choose mp4 to download the complete youtube video. Hit OK and your all done.
Download Get Tube to download You Tube Vidoes on a Mac.
I place the YouTube link into the box properly, but then The second box doesn’t appear. It just displays a Get Tube bar, with a bar loading, that goes nowhere.
Hi Kailey,
When you open GetTube, go to the menu bar and go into the preferences. Pick your destination that you want to save the video to, and select m4a for video or mp3 for audio only. Once you press the Get button you will get the loading bar and it will take it a while to download depending on the length of the video.
I did everything you said to. But it still shows up as nothing downloaded in the folder I destinated.. Its empty everytime.
Dana,
Sorry to hear, this isn’t working for you either. Stay tuned for a post I have coming up. It is a free alternative that will allow you to download Youtube videos. I will post it in the next day or so.
Wonderful software i would love to have it
Hey guys!
is there anything like this for a poor Windows-User?
followed your instructions and works fine, thanks it really helped out =)
Hi,
Thanks for this program. But I’m having the same problem as Kailey – after entering the Youtube link and clicking the ‘Get’ button the loading bar comes on until it times out. I haven’t seen the second box yet
Any suggestions?
yaaay! I got it to work after much persistence. thanks again for an awesome program!
NG, how did you get it to work!!!?
Most likely he just let it sit for a long time. The way that it downloads the video is it basically has to play the entire video. It doesnt show it doing this but instead looks like its just sitting there doing nothing. If you want to test it to make sure you are doing it right try it on a really short video first.
This app just doesn’t work on my MacBook Pro. I do get a file downloaded but it’s a 4kb QuickTime file that no application can open.
Let’s move on to some other application that works.
Dono what to tell ya. I’ve used it multiple times for both video and for just audio and its worked everytime.
I am now having the same issue with the downloaded file is 4k and of course it does not work. I think after a VLC upgrade the app stopped fuctioning. It worked great a couple of months ago.
Used to work great, then NOTHING. All I get now is a message:
An invalid public movie atom was found in the movie.
Any ideas?
I’m using Zamzar. It may be cumbersome, but it WORKS everytime.
Barry
I have downloaded getTube. When I press getTube cart on it, a window comes up saying choose where the firefox.app is! I dont know what that is. After I have chosen the right thing, what do I do after that? I am confused
Sorry, but where do I find the Get button? I downloaded app. It’s in my menu, but there’s no instruction about where to go from there. Thanks!
I had a wrong download file! Only 208 KB. The real download file is 2,2 MB.
So the program was not fully installed. Maybe you have the same problem so I recommend this link:
http://mac.softpedia.com/progDownload/Get-Tube-Download-24498.html
This one worked perfectly for me with Safari.
This program is foul .. it wont even get past the internet browser selection.
Why doesn’t anything ever work, fuckin shit.
Yeah I agree with Ryan it’s crap. It’s so crude it either works or it doesn’t. In my case it just gives me a choice of Safari or Firefox. I click on either and it thinks about something for a couple of seconds then nothing. Every time. Tried re-downloading the app, checked every setting (that took about 10 seconds) restarted browser, restarted mac. It doesn’t work. It is too crude. Nada.
It works fine. Everytime.
Install VLC. Run the GetTube, pick your browser, and WAIT. It takes a while to work. Dont wait 30 seconds. Wait 5-10 minutes.
This doesn’t seem to work, tried all the suggestions….:~(
sorry.
good
YouTubeRobot.com today announces YouTube Robot 2.0, a tool that enables you to download video from YouTube.com onto your PC, convert it to various formats to watch it when you are on the road on mobile devices like mobile phone, iPod, iPhone, Pocket PC, PSP, or Zune.
YouTube Robot allows you to search for videos using keywords or browse video by category, author, channel, language, tags, etc. When you find something noteworthy, you can preview the video right in YouTube Robot and then download it onto the hard disk drive. The speed, at which you will be downloading, is very high: up to 5 times faster than other software when you download a single file and up to 4 times faster when you download multiple files at a time.
Manual download is not the only option with YouTube Robot. You may as well schedule the download and conversion tasks to be executed automatically, even when you are not around. Downloading is followed by conversion to the format of your choice and uploading videos to a mobile device (if needed). For example, you can plug in iPod, select the video, go to bed, and when you wake up next morning, your iPod will be ready to play new YouTube videos.

Where dose it save your video to? I did the download thing and it said it was done but I can’t find the files. HELP?PLEASE!
Hai! I found a solution:
This prog checks title link in your chosen browser and if it is a supported format( the short link in the youtube/more info/URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W2lic06oQvs and no longer) than it puts it into the cart, than begin download. the bar only shows 0%, 50% and 100% so be patient
bye Xarg
is there anyway to get “get tube” on a non-mac/pc? cuz i dont have a mac but i want this app really badly!!! please help me
Hi Xarg,
Your suggestion is great works brilliant as you say, but I cannot find the download – anywhere? It is not in the folder I created for downloads, so am mystified. Any idea’s?
I get the small screen to choose firefox/safari, I click firefox and nothing happens, I’m probably doing something wrong, but I dont know what, so please help
okay, I think I figured it out
so when it’s done, where do the videos go? where can I find them back
where do the downloads go to when you’ve downloaded? same problem as Bob
Hi there
I have been trying to get GetTube to work like the others on this page and have had the same problems, you do have to wait several minutes (while it seems nothing is happening), then it just starts downloading the file. Now I have the same problem as the last guy, getting to the file in iTunes. I have found them listed in the “purchased” folder of iTunes, but they are “greyed out” so I cannot open them (and they do not show at all in the iTunes window). Any thoughts on how I can get them to list like all the other songs and vid? Thanks Dom
girl here, my mother language isn’t english, so I’m even having trouble finding the purchased folder and understanding all the terms you guys use…
so I waited and it started downloading, then it was finished and I couldnt find the downloaded file back…so what is it called? and how do you make it .avi when you find it?
I want one that does bulk jobs!!

I would like to download youtube to view movie, video etc.

Downloaded app. do not get the screen you show on your page. Simply says, select your browser, then starts cranking then says operation finished?
No file on the desktop, no window to paste URL, sip???
Hi Scott, something weird happened. I successfully downloaded 3 videos (ripping the audio), found the files no problem. Now it does not seem to be working anymore. I have read the whole thread here, and I’ve waited (hours) but no luck. Any suggestions? PS I just found your site, and I love it. Thanks for all the tips!
I found out what the problem is- any video with a “/” in the title can not be copied.
when i open get tube i select safari and when it starts searching for the Audio im down loading it says “No video or connection disabled”…..??
The whole download for youtube downloader didn’t even work on mine.
Hi everyone!
It just seems that Get Tube doesn’t work anymore since a couple of days. (It can’t find the video files on the YouTube sites, neither in Safari nor in Firefox. So you get the message “No video or connection disabled”)
My guess is, that YouTube has changed the file format for the videos (now it’s swf). Correct me, if I’m wrong …
) which handle it without having any trouble.
But there are plenty of converters for Windows (
So, with some changes in the script it should be possible to fix. (But I wonder whether the creators of the prog know about the whole trouble …)
I can confirm what Margarat post some comments before. Seems that Get tube has a problem with “/” in the YouTube title.
Found the same video on YouTube, but this time without a “/” in the title. Downloading works fine and the mp3 file was located in the correct folder.
Well, at least on my OS Leopard it doesn’t work at all for a couple of days.
And I’ve tried all kinds of vids, with or without a “/” in the title …
It just ignores the videos being there on the site …
I’ve to add, that the program has worked for about an entire year without any problems before.
I also have never had any troubles with storing the files (like described in some comments above).
vcg
I read the posts that Get Tube can’t download videos with a ‘/’ in the title.
Well it also seems to be unable to do that with ‘ ” ‘ either.
Dummmmb!
utilizo o programa para Windows e estouo passando para o sistema do Mac
Hey before any thing i wanted to ask you if this bring any viruses……also I was wondering if it can also be downloaded in a windows compUTER??…
I like Get Tube, but I always have the same problems listed here. I installed Realplayer Downloader, and that works great (even with non-youtube sites). The only problem being is that is only downloads in .flv format…I just use handbrake to convert. Timely but effective. But I also have two questions:
1. Does Get Tube work on non-youtube sites?
2. Will it work with Camino or Opera?
Thanks in advance!!
I’ve been deserately looking for ways of extracting both audio and video (mainly flv) from the web to my mac in various ways (sometimes need just audio, sometimes both).
I’ve googled the web extensively aver the last weekend and have only found 3 apps which either I can’t get to work / don’t work / aren’t explained properly.
These are (in descending order of frustration):
- ‘iSkysoft free video downloader’ which promises to ‘sniff out’ the video file being streamed and extract it magically onto your mac.
-’Get Tube’ obviously just for You Tube, just seems to think for a long time without producing any results.
-’iExtractMP3′ which searches your mac and not the web for the flv file from which you want the audio extracted. If I could get the flv onto my mac first then this could work. The app doesn’t seem to have that capability.
My most pressing flv file for extraction is hosted on Dailymotion.
Does each host require a different extraction app?
Thanks for any help you can offer
Pete
Thank you for the step by step instructions, I had a few problems at first (all user error) but now its working brilliantly, I love this app.
You totaly forgot the main one here:
youtube-downloads.110mb.com
It knows all native YouTube video formats: HD, MP4, FLV, 3GP videos, multiple simultaneous downloads, preview video, auto start download, skip already downloaded files, clipboard monitoring, drag & drop from IE / Firefox, proxy support, etc. Program size only 39Kb!!
I use it a lot!
Hey just wanna ask can get tube work on other tubes websites?
I get the small screen to choose firefox/safari, I click firefox and nothing happens, I’m probably doing something wrong, but I dont know what, so please help

Hi, Ive had this software for a while now, and has always worked perfect, I just open Get tube, it shows Icons for various Internet Browsres, I select the one that i have the video open in and voila it downloads, BUT

It´s over people, get tube is history… we had a good run

Hi There! I just recently downloaded Get Tube and I have seemed to run in a problem. When I click on the application, two options show up; Safari or Firefox. I click on Safari and then it says “No Video or Connection Disabled…” I have no idea what to do or what it means. Please help me.
This always worked fine for me, but now I can’t see the box to search for videos! I
the search bar at the top is like cut off, it wont let me search a video…
Now its saying that it can’t find the video
It works perfectly for me. Has everyone installed the newest version (4.5.1)?
What I seem to be having trouble with for the first time is dragging the mp4 file into iTunes to play on my iPod.
Hey, i have also downloaded the app and it works perfectly, if you want things into itunes just select itunes as your default player on your mac. change the destination of the download to somewhere you can find it, then click it and it will open in itunes, the only problem i am having is it is showing as syncing to my IPOD but when i open my IPOD it isnt on there, anyone know how to solve this?
[...] Descarga Get Tube [...]
wow this is great
Thank you for the tip
I just downloaded this and it worked fine for the video files. However, for the audio file, it makes a zero byte file for me – any ideas?
I have the latest version and it worked for one song. Everything downloaded after that appears to download – the bar moves along – but when I look at the file it is there but at zero bytes. Weird. I cannot seem to find any program that is not very complicated.
hey i don’t have a “get” button in my get tube it only says download
try to uncheck the ‘high-quality’ checkbox… should work then… at least did so for me.
the search button is cut off! i need helpp
Okay. I downloaded the latest version and then tried to open it. But it open and instantly closes. There’s a problem with it.
it doesnt work anymore, i click download and what used to be the download bar comes up, but it doesnt download it just sits there and those nothing, i cant even exit out of the program when this happens
The same thing happens to me that happens to Kevin. It displays a full download bar immediately and freezes. I can only exit using force quit. Has the application been blocked?
