DRM Dumpster | Strip DRM Protection from your iTunes MP3s

drm dumpster iconIf you’ve purchased songs from iTunes then you know they come with DRM protection in an attempt to not let you use what you actually pay for in whatever way you want to use it.  DRM Dumpster is a small application that will allow you to strip the DRM out of any song purchased from iTunes and make it a plain old protection free MP3 the way God intended them to be.

While DRM Dumpster is a bit of a pain to use as it requires the use of rewriteable disks, it does at least work.  Not so long ago there was an application called JHYMN that stripped out the DRM from MP3s through software only, but Apple went and broke it with an iTunes update.  Since then DRM Dumpster is one of the few ways to actually get a bulk library unprotected.

From the developer:

DRM Dumpster is the legal way to convert DRM tracks from your iTunes music library to standard files. DRM Dumpster uses a CD-RW and iTunes itself to convert all of the DRM music files in your library or in a play list of your choice to files that you can use with any music player. With DRM Dumpster you can create MP3, AAC, Apple Lossles, AIFF, or WAV files from your DRM files.

DRM Dumpster uses the iTunes importers and selects the importer that you want to use without changing any of the import settings. To see or change, for example, the MP3 Import settings do this before running DRM Dumpster:

  1. Launch iTunes
  2. Open the Preferences
  3. Select Advanced
  4. Select Importing
  5. Select Import Using: MP3
  6. Choose your prefered import settings

DRM Dumpster will use your iTunes import settings, it does not change them.

Since DRM Dumpster supports any iTunes importer you need to make sure the settings for the importer that you want to use are correct before running DRM Dumpster.

Using DRM Dumpster is Easy:

  1. Launch DRM Dumpster
  2. Select the format that you want to import from the popup list
  3. Select the play list that you want to import from the popup list
  4. If you are using a non-English iTunes enter your language equivalent for the word Protected (for example in French use protégé and in German use Geschützt)
  5. Click the Dump DRM button
  6. Insert a CD-RW

Download DRM Dumpster to decrypt your MP3 files and use them however wherever and whenever you want and take it to the MAN.
