Convert Microsoft Office Open XML files for OS X

Posted by Scott | May 16, 2007 .

mac-word-icon.pngIf you’ve been unfortunate enough to have to use the newest version of Microsoft Office you may have noticed that there is a new file type that Word and Excel saves to.  The new format is called Open XML, and the name alone is the first dumb thing about it.  It’s not open.  The file wont open without a bit of difficulty unless your using MS Office 2007.

If your on a Mac and someone sends you one of these idiotic new file types, Microsoft has released a conversion tool that will convert the data to a Office 2004 compatible rich text file (.rtf).  However, on the Microsoft page, there is a disclaimer stating that the conversion tool is Beta and might not work:

The converter is a Beta release, and might be unable to convert all the data in Office Open XML files. After you convert a file, you should review the file carefully to make sure that it contains all of the information that you expect.”

If you have a file thats in the Open XML format and you really need to get it open from you Mac this is so far the best solution.

There is a better option to open Open XML docs. You can use NeoOffice. I exchanged Word 2007 files several times with co-workers who use Office 2007. NeoOffice can handle the files without a problem. And NeoOffice is free!

    Thanks wvtbon,

any work around than having to rely on MS products is a better solution in my opinion!
