Chax | iChat Application Feature Plugin

Posted by Scott | March 12, 2007 .

As you know, iChat is the built in instant messaging/video conferencing application for OS X. I’ve posted before on an alternative to iChat, but if you insist on using it you may want to check out Chax. Chax is a free extension to Apple iChat that provides additional features that really should be included in any IM client. A few of the main features that Chax provides are:

  • Tabbed chat windows
  • Unread message notifications in the dock
  • Animated user icons
  • Automatically reconnect when disconnected
  • Auto accept file transfers
  • Use nicknames instead of full names
  • Built-in log viewer
  • Send away auto-reply only once per conversation
  • Growl notifications for new messages and users changing status

There are quite a few other additions that using Chax will iChat to do. For a full list of features check out the Chax website. Once you download Chax, just run the installer and it will handle the rest from there. If you decide you dont like Chax and you want to unistall it, there are 2 methods to do so.

The quickest way is to run the Chax installer and select “Remove”. To manually remove Chax, open the Library folder in the user folder, open the InputManagers folder inside the Library folder and move the Chax folder to the trash. After logging out and back in, empty the trash.

Personally, I will stick with using Adium, but if you really like iChat and want to stay with it then Chax may make iChat even more enjoyable for you.
