Apple Mail | How to Access Gmail Using Apple Mail

Personally, I love Apple Mail. It is such a simplistic email application and is very easy to use. Switching back and forth between Outlook, Entourage, and Apple Mail all day long it makes me really appreciate how simple Mac apps are to use.

Outlook is super bloated, Entourage looks terrible, and Apple Mail is a happy medium for me; even without the integrated calendar functions (being that its free is nice as well).

So now that you know Apple Mail is the bees knees of mail applications, how do yo set it up to work with your current email? By now everyone has had the fuzzy warm feeling of being privledged enough to have gotten an invite to Google’s Gmail service. If you have’nt gotten an email to join the webmail service, or you’ve never heard of Gmail, well then you need to step up your internet skills.

Setting up Apple Mail to pull your Gmail email is a pretty quick and simple process that you can set up in minutes.

  • First you will need to log into your Gmail account and go to settings in the upper right hand corner. Once there, select Forwarding and Pop, and then enable Pop for all mail and save the changes.
  • Next go into Apple mail and select Mail and then Preferences from the Menu bar.

  • Go to the Accounts tab and click the plus (+) at the bottom of the window. This will bring up the new account window.
  • Enter “pop.gmail.com” in the Incoming Mail Server box.
  • Enter your Gmail email address in the User Name field.
  • Enter your Gmail password in the password field.

Your screen should now look similar to the screenshot below:

  • Now select Add Server and enter “smtp.gmail.com” in the Outgoing Mail Server box.
  • Enter 587 in the server port field and check the box for secure socket layers (ssl).
  • Enter your email address and password again here.

Your screen should look similar to the one below:

  • After hitting OK, go to the Advanced tab and check the box next to Use secure SSL.  When you do this the port will change to 995.

Once you have followedm these steps and hit OK, Apple Mail should sync up with your Gmail inbox.  You may wish to change the frequency at which Apple Mail checks Gmail for new messages.  If your emails dont show up immediately in Apple Mail, give it a few minutes.  If after 10 minutes or so you still dont have your emails, you may need to restart Apple Mail.  To test and make sure your set it up correctly just send your self an email message from Apple mail sending it to the gmail address you just set up.  If everything was done correctly you will recieve your email from yourself pretty quickly.
