Apple Mail | How to Access Gmail Using Apple Mail

Personally, I love Apple Mail. It is such a simplistic email application and is very easy to use. Switching back and forth between Outlook, Entourage, and Apple Mail all day long it makes me really appreciate how simple Mac apps are to use.
Outlook is super bloated, Entourage looks terrible, and Apple Mail is a happy medium for me; even without the integrated calendar functions (being that its free is nice as well).
So now that you know Apple Mail is the bees knees of mail applications, how do yo set it up to work with your current email? By now everyone has had the fuzzy warm feeling of being privledged enough to have gotten an invite to Google’s Gmail service. If you have’nt gotten an email to join the webmail service, or you’ve never heard of Gmail, well then you need to step up your internet skills.
Setting up Apple Mail to pull your Gmail email is a pretty quick and simple process that you can set up in minutes.
- First you will need to log into your Gmail account and go to settings in the upper right hand corner. Once there, select Forwarding and Pop, and then enable Pop for all mail and save the changes.
- Next go into Apple mail and select Mail and then Preferences from the Menu bar.

- Go to the Accounts tab and click the plus (+) at the bottom of the window. This will bring up the new account window.
- Enter “pop.gmail.com” in the Incoming Mail Server box.
- Enter your Gmail email address in the User Name field.
- Enter your Gmail password in the password field.
Your screen should now look similar to the screenshot below:

- Now select Add Server and enter “smtp.gmail.com” in the Outgoing Mail Server box.
- Enter 587 in the server port field and check the box for secure socket layers (ssl).
- Enter your email address and password again here.
Your screen should look similar to the one below:

- After hitting OK, go to the Advanced tab and check the box next to Use secure SSL. When you do this the port will change to 995.
Once you have followedm these steps and hit OK, Apple Mail should sync up with your Gmail inbox. You may wish to change the frequency at which Apple Mail checks Gmail for new messages. If your emails dont show up immediately in Apple Mail, give it a few minutes. If after 10 minutes or so you still dont have your emails, you may need to restart Apple Mail. To test and make sure your set it up correctly just send your self an email message from Apple mail sending it to the gmail address you just set up. If everything was done correctly you will recieve your email from yourself pretty quickly.
I `ve done it. but know i have a problem. would you like to help me? i dont want to have all my 5000 mesges from gmail in my imail. i only want to download the last month.
thank
Su
yeah this site was very helpful though it says that I am always rejected when I’m sending a message. I put the exact information into the outgoing server as it says above.
Susana, in the search box to the left of Mail you want to enter keywords for the messages that you don’t want such as “september”, “2007″, etc.
That’s pretty funny…. to love something that is a happy medium between “looking terrible” and “super bloated”.
I got this one cousin I’d like you to meet…. she’s got a great personality.
I desperately need help, have been searching for hours for an answer, can’t find one, and you look intelligent enough to maybe help.
I have set up 4 gmail accounts (actually clearwire.net which subs them out to gmail). They’re all set up in Mac Mail 3.6 just fine except one thing. I can only set up smtp.gmail.com. So, every time I send an e-mail from any of the accounts, it looks fine when I send it, but for whomever receives it, the “from” line is always my primary account associated with the clearwire account, not the account I actually sent it from. So, to the world, I look like I only have 1 email address and they always respond to it. Yet, when I send an e-mail from any of these accounts using my iPhone, they send perfectly. I can’t find anything in Mac Mail preferences to help. I saw an article that said to put in smtp.gmail.com:username@gmail.com. I of course typed (using my real username) smtp.gmail.com:username.clearwire.net. It just tells me the account isn’t online. If anyone can help, I sure would appreciate it. The dolts at Apple didn’t tell me that my One-to-One was expiring and after it did they wouldn’t let me renew it. If you can help, you can contact me at ourstuff@clearwire.net Thank you.
Works perfectly, but i dont want my 10000 emails of all time coming in… just from now on… what do i need to do???
thanks!
To everyone, the only way to setup gmail in Apple Mail is by first importing all your gmail. If you want, you can delete them after.
