A new drinking game has been created by the guys at SCI FI Tech, most likely by someone that had been drinking (like all the good games are surely created). This one is for the interweber who loves web 2.0 and all the sites that define it such as Digg, MySpace, etc. While it doesnt sound like a very fun game, the rules are a very clever way at making fun of all things Web2.0.

Brent, I expect drunken comments from you since you love MySpace more than any grown man should.

MySpace

Take a drink for every message you get from a blatantly obvious pornbot.
Take a drink for every friend request you get from a mediocre unknown band.
Take a drink if you manage to find the person you had a crush on in 2nd grade.
Finish your drink if they’re still hot.
Take a drink for every profile you come across that has illegible text due to a huge, awful background image.
Take a drink for every girl wearing next to nothing in her profile photo with over 1,000 friends.
Take a drink every time you hit stop on a profile’s music because you’re already listening to music.
Take two drinks if you’ve ever met up with someone you met on MySpace.
Finish your drink if they were significantly less attractive than their photo makes them look.

Digg

Take a drink if you see a story on the Digg front page about Digg itself.
Take another drink if the story is about Digg founder Kevin Rose.
Take another drink if the story about Kevin Rose is a half-baked conspiracy theory.
Take a drink if the same story has been submitted twice on the first page of fresh stories.
Take 2 drinks if there are 4 repeats.
Finish your drink if there are 6 repeats.
Take a drink for every Nintendo Wii or Apple story with more than 100 comments.
Take a drink for every story that was obviously submitted by its author.
Take a drink for every comment that criticizes poor spelling or grammar in a way that is grammatically incorrect or features misspelled words.
Take a drink for every story whose link is dead because the “Digg Effect” crashed the site.
Take a drink for every 5 commenters who complain about it.
Finish your drink if the site’s webmaster complains about it.

YouTube

Take a drink every time you see a video of a celebrity doing something embarrassing.
Take another drink if that celebrity is P. Diddy.
Take a drink every time you sneak a peek at a NSFW video at work.
Take a drink every time someone forwards you a video that is so boring or lame you don’t finish watching it.
Take a drink for every video you see of someone doing something (drumming, guitar playing, etc.) really quickly.
Take a drink for every video designed to look like a home video that’s obviously part of a publicity stunt from a major corporation.
Take a drink every time you watch a clip from a show you forgot to TiVo.
Take a drink every time you find a music video you haven’t seen in years and realize it’s not as cool as it was when you were 13.

Wikipedia

Take a drink for every article that seems to be of questionable accuracy.
Take a drink for every article that someone has snuck a reference to Stephen Colbert into.
Take a drink for every NSFW photo you find hosted on an article you looked up as a joke.
Take a drink every time you get in trouble for citing Wikipedia as a trustworthy source.
Take a drink for every article you find that you were sure wouldn’t have an article on Wikipedia.
Take a drink for every 15 minutes you’ve wasted just reading random articles instead of working.
Finish your beer if you’ve ever actually corrected or submitted an article.
Drink a keg if there’s an entry for you on Wikipedia — and you didn’t submit it.

Flickr

Take a drink for every 10 photos you have uploaded.
Take a drink for every embarrassing photo of yourself you wish you could remove from your friends’ pages.
Take a drink for every user page you find that has every mediocre photo they’ve ever taken.
Take a drink for every tag of questionable accuracy you find on people’s photos.
Take a drink for every photo you see of drunk people with their arms around each others shoulders.
Take a drink for every generic city skyline shot taken at an angle at an attempt at being “artistic.” Editor: Hey…
Take a drink for every generic landscape/mountain/sunset shot you see.
Take a drink for every photo of yourself you can find.
Take a drink for every picture of someone’s cat.
Finish a six pack if you’ve posted pictures of your cat.

1) You wish the people who do movie credits would start spelling stunt dubl the right way.

2) When helping a client find the right domain, you suggest she add “moz” to the legal business name.

3) The S, E, and O keys on your keyboard are broken.

4) When your son tells you he wants to go play in the sandbox, you tell him it doesn’t exist.

or

7) You can pronounce Krasilovsky.

You giggle like a little girl every time you tell the butcher you’d like some pork Cuttlets.

9) Latent Semantic Indexing makes sense to you.

10) When your child asks you to explain the myth of Sisyphus, you tell her about the DMOZ submission process.

11) You lay awake at night wondering who would win a foot race: a marketing pilgrim or a marketing sherpa.

12) You feel uncomfortable and out of place at a minor league baseball game because you don’t see a Text Link Ads advertisement on the outfield wall.

13) At the same ball game, you wonder why the souvenir stand is only selling gray hats.

15) You know the URLs for Search Engine Guide, Search Engine Herald, Search Engine Journal, Search Engine Lowdown, Search Engine Roundtable, and Search Engine Watch, and can explain the nuances which make each unique, not to mention rattle off the list of writers for each one, including those who write for more than one of them.

16) Following in the footsteps of Cartoon Barry, your brilliant idea for 2007 is to create an alter-ego for yourself called “SEO Shaft.” Your blog’s tagline will be “Can ya Digg it?”

17) You wish every search engine had a duplicate content filter as good as TiVo’s.

18) When your daughter brings home a new boyfriend to meet you, your first thought is to check his backlinks.

Scrapblog is a somewhat new online presense that is taking online photo sharing to the next level. Sure there are hundreds of other photo sharing networks out there allready, so what is the need for another you ask? Scrapblog takes it one step beyond all the others and provides a truely unique experience.

Using Scrapblog allows members to

“create stunning multimedia scrapbooks featuring your photos, videos, audio and a bunch of creative elements. Scrapblog is drag-and-drop-easy so that everyone can tell their stories and share them online or turn them into high-quality photo books and DVDs.”

Scrapblog is a free service and doesn’t require any type of download. It’s all web based like the other services such as Flickr and Zoomr. But where it sets it self apart is the customization ability it provides its members. The images below show a few examples of pages that users are able to create in a fashion very similar to that of iWeb from Apple.

The new version of Scrapblog is currently in beta and will be released soon. If you would like to create your on scrapblog page, the current version of the site can be found at Scrapblog.com.

Ranging from new ipod models to home media hardware, Apple finally unveiled that at least some of the rumors floating around were true. The only thing missing from todays presentation was the announcement of the much rumored Apple iPhone.

Up first were the iPod upgrades which included the following:

New 80GB Model. This is an insane amount of space for something as small as the iPod, but with the annoucnement of movies (covered below) it was a neccesary step up for them to make.

iPod nanos (Image) recieved a makeover and are now incased in aluminum, and available in 5 colors (black, pink, green, blue, silver) with a increased battery life of now up to 24 hours. The screens also recieved a 40% increase in brightness.

iPod Shuffle (Image) got a complete make over. The size has been cut way down, and it also is incased in the same aluminum inclosure as the iPod Nanos. A clip has also been added to the back for easy wearability.

iTunes was next on the list. Version 7.0 brings some pretty nice visual upgardes as well as functionality.

Movie downloads was the biggest feature addition. Apple now not only offers Music, TV Shows, and Podcasts, they have completed the media sector and now offer Movie downloads. New releases will be 12.99 for the first week, and library titles will be 9.99-14.99.

Cover flow is just a little eye candy that they love to add in wherever possible. It allows you to browse through your media collection using album art from cd covers or movie covers, as well as images from tv shows and podcasts.

Upgraded features for syncing the iPod with iTunes has been added.

Gapless playback is another feature that has been added. iTunes will scan your library and find the tracks that should be played seamlessly such Pink Floyds Dark Side of the Moon, or classical songs.

Automatic Album art is a feature that will allow iTunes to connect to the music database and download any missing album art that you dont have for any of your songs. This is a nice feature if you really like cover flow, but other than that, theres no point really as it just uses up unneccessary space on your hard drive and ipod.

The announcement of movies seemed to be the biggest announcement of the presentation, which really didnt do much for me because I dont have a video iPod nor do I want to sit at my computer and watch a movie. Sure I could probably burn the movie to a DVD and watch it on the tv but thats extra work.

Steve Jobs then gave his famous “Oh, and there’s one more thing…” line. He then confirmed one of the biggest rumors that have been going around that Apple is working on a media player to connect your computer to your TV and stream your media over to it.

Currently codenamed iTV, the new device looks just like a mac mini but is shorter and connects to your tv via analog or HDMI connection and has optical audio ports as well as usb and ethernet. The ethernet port is there incase you like running wires across the floor from your computer to your tv. Most people dont want to do that though, so Apple was kind enough to include wireless capabilities to stream Movies, Music, Podcasts, and Pictures directly from your computer to your TV with no messy wires. iTV will also connect to the internet and allow you to watch movie trailers directly from the apple website, and comes with a remote control so you dont have to get up and go to the computer to select what you want to play.

iTV (Image) will be available in the first quarter of 2007 and cost 299. Which is a pretty good price I think considering all that it is capable of doing.

Facebook is a social networking site that is aimed more at the college crowd as opposed to the whore known as MySpace, who lets anyone participate. In trying to keep up with the ever popular MySpace, Facebook has begun to unlease a few new features earlier this week, and if you listen carefully, you can hear a cry of joy from internet stalkers across the US.

The newest set of features for Facebook includes a little box on every persons profile which is alot like an RSS reader but it shows everything a user is doing within the site. Such things that are tracked range from any type of change you make to your profile such as your dating availability, to any new goup that you decide to join or leave. This level of tracking is a little overboard in my opinion, and others across the net seem to agree. Facebook says that all information displayed is nothing that wasn’t available before, its just now in an easily accessible and readable location.
In fairness to Facebook, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Users are able to remove actions from their feeds that they dont want others to be able to see, and your privacy settings also apply.

While this is a pretty neat addition to Facebook, it is certainly nothing that will win over people from using MySpace. In fact it may cause people to be less likely to use the site who dont want to worry about their every move being watched by any and everyone that comes across their profile.

MySpace users are beginning to finally get the picture. MySpace really isn’t all that great. I’ve never been a fan of it only because I feel it is an online version of highschool where people try increase their number of “friends” when honestly, they couldnt care less about the majority of those people. With the widespread use and “MySpace” being the most searched for term out of anything else on the entire internet, advertisers and spammers have begun to attack the site.

User’s are complaining about the abundance of fake celebrity profiles, as well as companies posing as teens to promote their products. Taking the advertising one step further, MySpace has recently signed a deal with Google to provide advertising, and there are other advertisers interested in purchasing what little space is left on a page to bombard you with more ads.

With all of the advertising spamming begining to take place, the realness of the social network will begin to be so diluted that most likely users will turn their backs on their beloved MySpace in search of the next big internet craze. The queston at hand is how will MySpace handle these spam tactics? Will they do nothing and allow them to continue or take steps at preventing them. I’ve read of possible expansions of MySpace into multiple niche areas specifically for companies to go in and create their profile rather than jamming up the original MySpace network idea. In my opinion they will certainly need to address the issue in some way or face a quick failure in the not so distant future.

Web 2.0 is a term I’m pretty sick of hearing thrown around, but it seems to be here for good. Most of these sites are startups that have began with just an idea that someone put together and hit it big time and are actually quite ingenius. The idea of social search gives the users more reason to contribute (sometimes too much of a reason as seen with spammers and Digg Armies) and is changing the way people get their news.

I for one know that I never watch the nightly news, or rarely look at any real dedicated news sites. Why should I when there are sites like the following that people submit to pulling all of the best information from the web into a few locations. Get yourself a good 20-30 RSS feeds and you can basically have all of the information you could ever want to know and more. If your looking for a few good RSS feeds, you’ll most likely want to check out at least a couple of these “top” sites that are changing the face of the web.

There are quite a few that I’ve never heard of that offer serivces which are widely known about by other start ups allready, but the article is by someone at CNN who is probably old and doesnt really know exactly what they are talking about. Missing from this list in my opinon are Blogger, Reddit, Slashdot, MySpace, and literaly hundereds more.

Only time will tell which of these survive and become the true future of the web and which ones will die out and never be heard from again.

For those of you not familiar with Skype, the basic idea of the software is to allow you to use your computer to call both other computers as well as any regular phone line, and then using a variation of Voice over IP (VoIP) to handle the audio. Calling from your computer to another Skype user’s computer is free, but calling to phone lines, as well as having the ability to have a phone number for phone lines to call your computer requires you to sign up for their subscription based services (which is still very cheap compared to typical phone services). Although, they are offering the ability for you to call out to phone lines for free anywhere in the US and Canada for free for the remainder of the year. So if you haven’t checked it out, theres no reason not to.

If your planning on using Skype on a regular basis for business or as a replacement for your home phone, your probably going to want something better than your typical built in computer microphone for better sound quality though. Radian Technologies looks to solve that problem for you with their new USB SkyTone phone specifically made for use with Skype.

Many of the people involved in testing the phone stated the sound quality ranged from “sounds just fine” to “crystal clear”. There is an LCD screen on the phone which dispalys your contact list for easy calling, and the phone is lightweight and looks very similar to a normal phone. This is good because it makes you feel like less of a nerd for using your computer as a phone. Since the phone is a pretty small size, you are easily able to take it with you wherever you go and use it in combination with a laptop computer.

You can pick the phone up online anywhere from 30-50 dollars depending on how hard you look. So if your thinking about switching to a VOIP service, I would definetly recommend checking out Skype, and picking up either the Skytone USB phone, or some type of headset to use.

Wablet is putting a new spin on the web based IM arena. There are allready plenty of web based IM clients such as Meebo, eBuddy, and even AOL Instant messanger has an online version called AIM Express. So what is Wablet doing differently? Wablet is making a small “widget” based client that you are able to drag around and place anywhere on your screen just like a normal IM client, but it also offers the feature of adding the widget to any blog or webpage.

This means that you can have all types of strangers IM you through out the day that come across your different sites such as MySpace or blog page. Not only will this allow crazy people that you dont know to IM you all during the day (they do have to have your permission first though), it would be a great way to keep in touch with friends and family. Also, If you run a business from your website though, this little widget may be a great addition to your site. Wablet would allow direct communication with clients and customers.

If you do decide to use it as an alternative to the typical aim/trillian/gaim clients, Wablet does look like it has some pretty cool looking features. Most clients allow the use of tabbed chatting to have an organized desktop when talking with multiple people at one time. But tabs are boring looking, so Wablet has handled this by using Avatars of each person involved in chats above a single text box which you are able to switch between easily.

You will also notice the use of what Wablet refers to as “badges”. These are the little links to the persons various profile pages such as MySpace, Flickr, or Blogspot page. Its just one more way of keeping people connected in as many ways as possible.

Wablet is currently still in a closed alpha version, but you are able to sign up for the testing if you are interested at their site. Wablet is hoping to launch a test with its first 500 users at the end of the month.
