The Quest for better Internet Search Results.

Posted by Scott | May 15, 2006 .

Since the beginning of the internet, finding a way to sort through all of the data and find what you are looking for has always been difficult. The 3 big players of Google, MSN, and Yahoo are doing a very good job for what it is today. The search engines return a list of best possible matches based on what you type in and, well lists are just plain boring. Ask.com has tried to spice up their results somewhat by having thumbnails of the pages displayed next to the results of searches, but a new site that is still in the development stages has taken it one step further. Snap.com is a new form of search engine created by “Bill Gross, the inventor of paid Web search who sold the system to Yahoo, is set to unveil a new version of his latest project. Snap.com is aimed at broadband users and gives people visual snapshots of Web sites before they click.”

As of now, even on a broadband connection, Snap.com runs somewhat slow, but I like the idea of what has been put together thus far. When performing a search, a drop down box will make suggestions as you type to other popular searches based on what you are typing which is a nice feature, not because you type too slow and its trying to hurry you along, but it expands your thoughts for you into finding more precise results of what you might be looking for. The interface is nice and very Web 2.0 for those of you that are into big fonts and neat colors.

Another nice feature of the interface is that the results window is located on the left hand side, while a very large screenshot of the homepage is displayed on the right. This is nice for a few reasons. First of all you can see the site in pretty good detail before you actually go to it. Secondly the image size can be adusted large enough so that you can actually read the page without even having to go to it. Not having to actually go to the site allows you to keep your search results in plain view allowing you to skip down to the next result with out much effort.

I personally like Snap.com, though it has some work to do in order to start actually competing against the big engines like Google. My main concern with it is that it needs to be quicker, especially with a name like Snap.

The more search engines, the better and the merrier.

    Google is still the best.

    God bless.

I wouldnt say Google is the best, most popular and most talked about maybe but I think Google is straying to far from search and focusing on too much at once.
