My first trip to New York

Posted by Scott | August 6, 2006 .

Growing up we didnt do alot of traveling in my family, so little that untill this past week I had never been on airplane. Not traveling on an airplane means we drove wherever we went so we kept it close and I had never been outside of the bordering states of North Carolina, other than West Virginia which I dont count as a real state. The company I am working for now, is located in New York at the Empire State building so I had been looking forward for the chance to go up their for the first time and expand my horizons.

After landing at JFK International in New York my horizons were expanded quickly with the scariest hour of my life in the taxi from the airport to the office. I was a little nervous about the flight because I didnt know what to expect really, but looking back on it I was much more frightened in the Taxi ride than at any point on the plane. After weaving in and out of traffic in lanes too small for a bike rider to feel comfortable in, and riding on the sidewalk at one point, and driving on the wrong side of the rode for a moment towards oncoming traffic, I began thinking to myself dying in a taxi would probably be my last choice of ways to die if I could choose. After driving like he was blindfolded, someone cut our taxi off and the cabbie had none of it. He laid on the horn for about 30 seconds while followng the man that had cut him off. Here I began thinking to myself, this is the exact same thing you have just done to at least 45 other people and now you are mad someone did it to you. But anyway the guy that cut us off did not appreciate the horn blowing so he decided he would slow down and get beside us and unleash the most powerful spit I have ever seen. It was like a water balloon had exploded on our window. The cabbie just kept driving like nothing out of the oridnary had happened. I knew at this point I certainly was not in the city of medicine known as Durham. Which might be a good thing because it probably would have been a drive by with bullets rather than spit.

The rest of the trip was good, other than the early morning incident I had with the smoke alarm I set off from the steam of my shower, that I couldnt get to turn off for about 20 minutes and having to go downstairs and have someone come up and fix it. The flight back left an hour late but they had free tv and satalite radio on the plane so I was happy watching the season finale of The Hills. As I watched it, I thought of Steve who I know would have been in heaven being able to watch The Hills while sitting in a plane at the same time.

Taxi’s in NYC isn’t that bad. They drive wrecklessly, but few ever go over 20MPH. If he gets hit, it’ll just be a dent on the side of the car, instead of real injuries and stuff. With that being said, I don’t think I’d ever want to drive in NYC unless I had to; I wouldn’t want my car dented.

Oh yeah, the last time I rode a taxi in NYC (about 2 weeks ago), he had a flat tire, went out and changed it, and went on like nothing happened.

I’m glad you go to enjoy NYC, what part did you go to? I went to Manhattan. It’s different, it’s exciting, but I don’t think it’s something I’d want to live in. I’d much prefer living in the suburb-like areas, such as Charotte, Raleigh or Alexandria (where I live now).

Funny Scott, until recently I’ve never flown commercial either. We always fly on daddy’s jet, but I never been able to watch me on MTV while on daddy’s jet.

Who’s Steve? He sounds cute. Does he live in LA?

    Love,
    LC
