As I was reading my monthly subscription to Maxim, I came across an ad that caught my eye, and led me to do something I dont normaly do with my Maxims, and thats read what it had to say. The ad was for the MusicGremlin (pictured right), which is yet another MP3 player entering the market of one thats allready saturated with different players from different brands. As of yet, there hasn’t been one that has come even close to the iPod, but in my opinion this one could be one of the next best players.
The MusicGremlin looks to offer navigation very similar to that of the iPod, which has always been one of the main reasons people flock to the iPod, other than of course the iPods are yuppie magnets. Other than the look of the navigation, there seems to be a very simple set of controls for the user to use which has always been a big complaint of some of the other mp3 players.
The Music Gremlin has an 8 GB hard drive, which is a little small for my needs personally, but for many people that is plenty big. It also has a built in FM reciever, and is set at a price of $299. Thats pretty expensive you say. Why should I look into one of these when I could get an iPod for the same price and know that I will be happy with it? Well, the Music Gremlin offers plenty of other features no iPod can do. The Music Gremlin is capable of downloading music to itself wireless, no computer neccessary. The player can either connect to any wi-fi network and then connect to an online store where you are able to pay either $14.99 a month for unlimited downloads, which go away if the subscription is cancelled or ends. Or you can pay the typical .99 cents per song and keep them forever. Kinda like what Napster does.
A second awesome feature of the Music Gremlin is that it can connect to other Gremlins in the area, even with where no wi-fi access is available, and you can swap playlists and listen to the music on your Gremlin that the other person has stored on theirs. Sounds like an awesome feature to me, but I would have to be sure to delete such songs as Hanson’s MmmBop, and any other embarrasing songs that I may or may not have in my collection
.
