Kids today and their technology.

Posted by Scott | May 27, 2006 .

Little RascalsKids today have no idea what its like to live in an era of no cell phones, no interent, or any of the other technological advances we take for granted today. They have been surrounded by it all their life, and when someone tries to take it away, block them from using it, or denying them to use it in anyway, thats when they become the most resourceful and find away around it. A recent case of this is with schools trying to block access to sites such as MySpace. Kids found many ways around the block in just a few days by using proxy’s and various other methods.

Kids in school are also not allowed to have their cell phones turned on during school hours which makes sense, besides, who is going to call them, their parents are at work, and all their friends are in school as well. But as I said before, kids wont be denied. Some school kids today are using a ring tone that they have created and began calling “Teen Buzz”, which is a sucky name in my opinion.

The ring tone basically works the same way the Mosiquito Alarm works that is being used at some malls to keep teens and young gangs away. It is a very high pitch frequency noise at about 18 to 20kHz. This frequency can only be heard by the young kids. As you reach the age of about 20 and up you begin to loose the ability to hear that high of a pitch, and kids are using that to keep their teachers from hearing their phones ring during class. The kids recorded the high frequency noise and converted it to a ringtone and have began spreading it to all of their friends via bluetooth and text messages.

A secondary school teacher in Cardiff said: ‘All the kids were laughing about something, but I didn’t know what. They know phones must be turned off during school. They could all hear somebody’s phone ringing but I couldn’t hear a thing.

This “Mosquito Technology” the kids are using as the ringtone is taking advantage of the medical issue called presbycusis which is just a fancy word medical people like to use to sound smarter referring to age related hearing loss. I guess these kids havent ever heard of putting their phone on silent, or vibrate, but I suppose this works just as well.

The link to download the mp3 of the frequency can be found here.  Its not in English, but just click on the links and it will play.  I for one couldnt hear the lower ranged frequencies at the bottom. I had to turn my speakers up pretty loud to be able to hear the ones in the 30Hz range.  I guess I’m only kind of old since I could still hear that.  But Im not sure if I would have been able to hear it coming from a cell phone rather than my surround sound speakers on the computer. As a word of caution now thinking back on it, you may want to be careful about turning the volume up to loud even if you cant hear it, the frequency may do some type of damage to your ears if done for a long period of time. As for me, I can still hear. At least at the 30 Hz range.

What will those little rascals think of next.

Kids todaye of are in trouble of relying on technology too much.

I think it’s making me dumber. I used to be ble to remember phone numbers from way back in my childhood, now if its not in my phone im screwed.

And now i cant read a book w/o getting bored or turning my attention to something else. The internet and technology is so now now now that I think im getting dumber.

I don’t think people are getting dumber with tech, lazier maybe, but not dumber. We just use our brains in a diff way now. We remember to input the number instead of remembering the number itself.

And about the high pitch that adults can’t hear but kids can, can’t we mess with them by planting a device that produces that pitch and set it in a middle or high school? When they whine about it, the teachers, principle, and technicians won’t “hear a thing”.

I agree…not so much dumber…lazier for sure because its so much easier to rely on things than to take the time memorizing things yourself…its going to get us all into trouble one of these days!!!
