Since I lost my job, I have noticed that in this land of freedom called America, that not much is actually free. There is rent to pay, bills to pay, food to buy, and of course Xbox Live to pay for. That is to say until today. Today, Tuesday February 28th, my day was filled with good fortune of free things.
First as I am trolling through the various job search engines such as Monster.com and Hotjobs.com, I got bored and began to look for new places to live. Driving by one apartment complex I saw a sign that says “Free Dell!”. So I looked them up and sure enough there is a coupon on their website for a free Dell computer, as well as 2 months of free rent. Thinking this is a good deal, I print out the coupon and am saving it for a future moving date.
Second thing that happens today is, as I am jammin to some “Jungle Boogie” unneccessarily loud on the computer, I recieve a knock on the door. Who could this be? I thought to myself. Everyone I know for the most part isnt a bum, other than the other lay off victims none of which know where I live, and Evan who isnt really a bum since he is actually making money while sitting at home and sending me various links to different things such as xbox controllers with “adult” toys attached to them. So I opened the door and find a package sitting on the ground. I have no idea what it is, so I rip into it with thoughts of various gifts I would enjoy, such as a red rider BB gun. Althought it was none of the things I was dreaming of, it was still a surprise. It was my free xbox 360 sweatshirt that I ordered several several months back for drinking ungodly amounts of mt dew trying to win a 360 when they first came out. I thought all hope was lost in actually recieiving this gift from the good people of Mountain Dew, but 4-5 months later here it is and keeping me warm as i type this post.
Thirdly today, I go to the mailbox expecting to find nothing more than the various junk mail that is always there, but alass, there is something from the Security Exchange Comission. It can only be one thing, my first check from the Unemployment offices. Indeed it was. I love the fact that after laying off 50 or so people that my former company must pay out unemployment money to me while I do whatever I want all day long (which usually includes at least 1 if not 2 naps per day) as long as I am looking for new jobs.
So on this day of February 28th 2006, I would just like to stop and think about just how great this place called America, land of the free, home of the brave truley is.
