My name is Scott Kellam. I’ve been doing SEO since 2005 and remain as passionate about it today. I’m lucky to have worked with some of the best in the industry from all over the world.
Born and raised in North Carolina, I graduated from Appalachian State University with a degree in Information Systems. A degree that reinforces the use of both sides of your brain through creativity on the left side while at the same time being highly analytical and technical with the right side. I’ve always had a strong interest in arts – drawing, painting, books, TV, movies and music, but I’m also equally interested in coding, numbers, and understanding how and why things work the way they do. I believe the combination of creativity and curiosity are what true search marketers, and in particular SEOs, are made of.
My career in SEO started in 2005 at WebSourced in Morrisville NC; a time when SEO had only just begun to emerge. I learned basic concepts by reading the classic ‘SEO for Dummies’ book and by being surrounded and taught by incredibly clever people, many who are still thriving in the industry today. After a year, I then had the opportunity to join a boutique agency, Acronym Media, located in New York.
I spent the next 8 years with Acronym where I truly learned what SEO was all about, how to do it at scale for massive companies, and had the privilege of working with truly amazing talent. I eventually took over responsibility of running the SEO department after a few years, and was then presented with the opportunity to move to their Singapore office to grow an offering in Asia in 2013.
While SEO and digital marketing in Asia was, and still is in many ways, behind compared to the West, its growing at an incredibly rapid rate. After being in Singapore for a few months I was recruited to GroupM, where I became responsible for helping to develop, build and execute an SEO offering that would support the entire APAC region for MediaCom, Mindshare, MEC and Maxus. The experience continues to be an invaluable learning opportunity to understand key differences and complexities between the different markets and how SEO can play a role within them.
I’m not all SEO all the time though. I also enjoy traveling (18 countries visited and counting). I have an advanced certification in scuba diving. I’ve snowboarded for 15 years. I love classic 80s movies. And I’ve recently started reading Steven King books.
